Park Name For Chad
Fuqua
by Greg Brock |
At least this way, everyone will remember him." That
comment was made to Assistant Hollister City
Administrator Vonnie Mathiesen this afternoon as
Alderman Scott McCaulley stood with her as they looked
at the sign which names the former Town Hall Square Park
in honor of her son.
Aldermen last month voted to re-name the recently
dedicated park in honor of Chad Fuqua who was killed by
an alleged drunk driver in August. Fuqua had been
Hollister's parks director for ten years, and one
evening in July joined a large group of city officials
and residents in dedicating the park which has a walking
path and a smaller recreation of the old St. James
Street Bridge, that is made from pieces of the actual
bridge.
The sign with Fuqua's name on it was put into place
around 2:30 this afternoon. While fighting back tears,
Matheisen said she wished it would all go away... the
pain of losing her son. Looking at the his name on the
sign, Mathiesen recalled her son's wry sence of humor.
Mathiesen and her husband Bryan have pledged to match
donations to the Chad A. Fuqua Memorial Park Fund once
it receives five thousand dollars in donations. By
helping the fund reach this level and achieve the
matching donations, your contribution will be twice as
valuable. This afternoon she said several checks have
already come in and she's still amazed at the support
that people continue to show since the loss of her son.
Donations can be sent to the memorial fund in care of
the Hollister Parks Department, PO Box 638, Hollister.
For more information contact Mathiesen at 337-8315.
